14th Anniversary

13th Anniversary

12th Anniversary

July 22, 1994 marked an important turning point in the history of The Gambia, with the emergence of the AFPRC (Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council) to the political stage.  The actions of the brave and patriotic group of soldiers led by then Lt. Yahya AJJ Jammeh, abruptly ended nearly three decades of endemic corruption, bureaucratic ineptitude, economic decadence, and government ineffectiveness and indifference.

That fateful moment in the country's history also sparked an era of unprecedented development in all aspects of Gambian affairs.  The Government kept its promise to positively transform Gambian society once and for all!  Evidence of significant progress is quite ample: the establishment of modern information and communication technologies (internet connectivity, mobile telephony, high teledensity, etc.); the construction of modern highways, bridges, hospitals, schools, and a new airport terminal building; the setting up of the country's first television station; the founding of the University of The Gambia; the empowerment of women as reflected in their new political roles; the proliferation of media outlets and the diversity of views expressed; the conduct of internationally supervised free and fair elections; and so on.  Since assuming the helm in 1994, the Gambian leader, President Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh, has made significant contributions to the promotion of peace and the resolution of conflicts particularly in the West African sub-region.

The APRC government also re-directed agricultural policy in an effort to redress the daunting challenges of farmers and to enhance their general welfare through achieving sustainable food security and remunerative incomes. In the economic realm, the Gambia Government launched Vision 2020 and embarked on a comprehensive reform programme which underscored private-sector led growth.
