We are gathered here to witness yet another significant event in the annals of the July 22nd Revolution and I am delighted to be part of this auspicious occasion. Considering the difficult condition of this road over the past years, I am sure all its users particularly the people of this area will breathe a sigh of relief. The inauguration of this important segment of our road network is another fulfillment of my promise to the people of this country, and it is yet another manifestation of the resolve of my Government to provide a good road network to the Gambian population and hence enhance the socioeconomic development of the country
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, as I have stated at the inauguration of the Barra-Amdallai road, the provision of a high standard road network is a prerequisite for economic development and social cohesion. In this regard, my Government has prioritized road construction and has over the years invested heavily in the road sector and I am happy that the overall length of paved roads throughout the country has increased significantly.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, like Barra-Amdalaye, the Mandinaba- Seleti is also part of a major trunk roads rehabilitation project being financed by the European Commission. To compliment these major trunk roads, my Government is also investing in the rehabilitation of urban roads and the re-construction of feeder roads to provide vital access to the more remote areas of the country.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, The Gambia's location and size implies that it derives major benefits from the re-export trade. Both the North Bank and South Bank trunk roads provide critical routes for regional trading activities.
The upgrading of these roads which includes the Maridinaba-Seleti will therefore have a positive impact on regional trade and other domestic economic activities.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, it is obvious that numerous social benefits will be derived from the construction of this trunk road. Many villages will be served and access to schools, hospitals, and other social services will be greatly facilitated. Travel time and road user costs will also reduce.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, to achieve the goals outlined in the PRSP, my Government has taken a holistic approach to national development. As such, the construction of this road will be complimented by other necessary infrastructure in this area such as schools and health facilities, to enhance the living standards of the Gambian population.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, due to lack of optimal maintenance, this section of our road network like many others has undergone serious degradation over the years thus necessitating a complete reconstruction of the road. To avoid this scenario repeating and to protect the heavy investment being made on the national road network, Government in 2003 created the National Roads Authority which is responsible for the administration, maintenance and management of the entire road network.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, the Mandinaba- Seleti is constructed with grant financing from the European Commission and the inauguration of this project is yet another important event in the long standing Gambia - EC co-operation. Therefore, on behalf of the Government and people of the Gambia , I wish to express our sincere appreciation to the European Commission through the EC Charge D'Affaire.
I thank you all for your attention and may Allah bless you all.
