The Gambia celebrated the 16th Anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution at a colourful ceremony held at the Arch 22 in Banjul Thursday. The highlight of the ceremony was a march pass by security forces, school children, voluntary organizations and cultural groups.

In his traditional message to school children, the President Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh reiterated Government’s zero tolerance for corruption and the trafficking of illicit drugs. He therefore called for concerted efforts to combat the drug menace and expressed Government’s readiness to deploy stringent measures to severely deal with culprits.

President Jammeh renewed his commitment to the socio-economic development of The Gambia and the maintenance of peace and security in the country. He also called for renewed vigor and dedication among Gambians for the realization of the lofty goals of Vision 2020.

While declaring all out war on drugs and corruption President Jammeh dilated on its negative effects and the threat posed to social stability. The Gambian leader numerated the achievements made by his government in the past 16 years and called on all to safeguard the development gains of the country.

Professor Jammeh warned youths to be mindful of the selfish and unscrupulous drug dealers who he said are only concerned with enriching themselves to the detriment of the country and its youthful population. He further advised youths to cherish the country’s cultural values which he said lay special emphasis on hard work, good moral, peace and harmony.

President Jammeh also denounced corruption saying it leads to social conflict, instability and other civil strife. Professor Jammeh stressed the need for unity, mutual respect, and understanding among Gambians, stating that nepotism and tribalism has no place in his government. He advised students to be discipline and committed to their studies to enable them succeed in their educational careers.

 

Reception Hosted at State House Grounds

Meanwhile President Jammeh Wednesday hosted a reception in honour of the 16th Anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution at State House.

The colourful ceremony was attended by First Lady Madam Zineb Jammeh, the Vice President Madam Isatou Njie-Saidy, the president of the Taiwanese Parliament Jing Ping Wang, the speaker of the National Assembly, Cabinet Members, Service Chiefs, National Assembly Members, Senior Govt. Officials, Party Militants, Religious Leaders and a cross sector of the society.
