The Vice President Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy has inaugurated the IEC Head Office in Kanifing along Bertil Harding Highway. Wednesday's ceremony kick-start programmes marking the 16th Anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution. The building referred to as the Election House was constructed at a tune of over 12 Million Dalasi.
In her opening statement, Vice President Njie-Saidy commended the IEC Chairman and his team for their untiring efforts in the realization of the project. She said since its establishment in 1996, the IEC has successfully conducted two national presidential and parliamentary elections, in addition to other sub-national elections. Madam Njie-Saidy described these as no mean achievements given the enormous challenges that any successful election has to encounter. She pointed out that government will continue to assist the IEC in its operations in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Madam Njie-Saidy called for the full participation of all stakeholders, including donor agencies and development partners.
Speaking earlier the Chairman of the IEC Mustapha Carayol described the establishment of the IEC as a step in the right direction. He said that since its inception government has always provided the IEC with the needed resources to conduct its activities. He used the occasion to commend his staff for their hard work and dedication to duty and urged them to keep up the momentum.
In his speech a consultant Musa Sallah hailed the Gambian leader for his visionary leadership in trying to transform the country into a city state. He used the occasion to assure the IEC of his personal support at all times.
The ceremony was attended by Ministers, Members of the National Assembly, Service Chiefs and Senior Government Officials.
