21st July 2010

The President of the Taiwanese Parliament Wang Jing Ping accompanied by six legislators and the Taiwanese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wednesday paid a courtesy call on President Jammeh at State House. The delegation was led to State House by the Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia, Dr. Richard Shih and the Speaker of the National Assembly Madam Elizabeth Renner.

The high power delegation arrived in Banjul on Tuesday as special guests for the celebration of the 16th Anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution.

Addressing the delegation His Excellency the President Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh expressed gratitude to the government and people of Taiwan for being faithful to the cordial relations between the two countries. He described the high powered delegation as very symbolic in the relations between Taipei and Banjul.

The Gambian leader urged the delegation to make another visit the country to enable them assess the successful projects accomplished through the cooperation between the two countries particularly in the area of agriculture. He said The Gambia will continue to fight against injustices in the world, of which Taiwan is a victim.

In his speech, the President of the Taiwanese Parliament Wang JYNG PING conveyed his President's respect to the Gambian leader for his outstanding leadership. Mr Ping explained that the typhoon season in his country has made it difficult for President Jeou to attend the July 22nd celebrations. He thanked the government and people of The Gambia for their continuous support to Taiwan.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mamadou Tangara informed the delegation that Agriculture, Health and Education has been President Jammeh’s top priority, whose vision is to transform The Gambia into an economic super power.
