The consultative meeting of Guinea Bissau political parties ended on Friday at Kairaba Beach Hotel. Deputizing for the President, the Vice President Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy advised the parties to respect the agreements they signed during the meeting. Madam Njie-Saidy also prevailed on them to adopt a development oriented electioneering. The vice president urged the delegates to put the past behind them and move forward whiles thanking them for the confidence they have in The Gambia's mediation competence.
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Omar Touray said the forum was successful as all the parties have pledged to abide by the rules of the electoral process. He hoped that the delegates would live up to their responsibilities.
The Secretary of State for Fisheries and Water Resources Yankuba Touray said hosting of the meeting was a testimony of The Gambia's commitment to peace and stability in West Africa. He expressed optimism that the parties would translate the spirit of the forum into reality.
The Secretary of State for Local Government and Lands Ismaila Sambou urged the delegates to inject greater efforts in the maintenance of peace and stability and called on them to exhibit politics of honesty.
Malleh Sallah of the IEC saluted President Jammeh's efforts in peace building.
Other speakers included the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Cuban ambassador Carlos Mendi, the ambassador of Guinea Bissau to the Gambia Moneira Rideira and the head of the ECOWAS mission in Banjul Musa Dabal.
Earlier all the parties signed a Memorandum Of Understanding renewing their commitment to national reconciliation, consolidation of democracy and credible elections. The MOU also bound the parties to an electoral code of conduct.
