Guinea Bissau election; a great victory for Gambia - President Jammeh

8th September 2009

His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh has said that the Guinea Bissau election is a great victory for The Gambia.
The Gambian leader made this remark while speaking to reporters on Tuesday shortly after he landed at the Banjul International Airport from Guinea Bissau, where he attended the inauguration of President Malam Bachai Sahna.
President Jammeh remembered that before the elections there were lots of skepticisms and speculations that the elections would not be free and fair and that there will be violence. "But thank God that the Bissau-Guineans have listened to our advice as brothers and not as colonial masters," he remarked.

He reiterated his happiness and said that every Gambian should be happy that we have contributed to the peaceful outcome of the elections. "They have realized that what we told them is in their best interest and I think that every Bissau Guinean is happy. That is what we are looking forward to in any African country and elsewhere in the world," he said.

About the inauguration ceremony, President Jammeh said it was a success and that what made it more remarkable was the presence of the former presidential contender, Kumba Yala. This, he said, demonstrates their commitment to maintaining peace for the progress of Guinea Bissau. "This showed that they have listened to our advice. We have not advised them to become a colony of The Gambia but we instead advised them to be able to live in peace and harmony, so that they can also develop like The Gambia is developing. This is all we want for Africa, and this is all we want for humanity as a whole," he explained.

President Jammeh finally expressed optimism that the Bissau Guineans will put aside the violence because, "I think all of them have now realized that violence is not going to take them anywhere but into more problems and sufferings," he noted.
