My role included branch development and management, product and service development, E-Business implementation and overall driving of the bank’s liabilities and revenue mobilization and growth. As the most Senior Gambian in the bank, I was responsible for building and maintenance of the Bank’s corporate image and engage in most of our Community Partnership initiatives.
Managing Director, Dunes Resort and Casino, 15th May 2006 to 4th May 2008
Having spent 10 years in Banking, I decided to move to the Hospitality Industry and took up the challenge of setting up and managing The Gambia’s premier Resort and Casino, located in the sandy beach of Kotu. The resort boasts of 22 units, with breath taking view of the Atlantic Ocean, consisting of premium suites, deluxe and family rooms. The restaurant has both interior and exterior dinning, whilst the casino has an array of table games and innovative slot machines.
During this period, I served as Executive Member in The Gambia Hotel Association and represented the Tourism fraternity in Trade Fairs and Sales Blitz.
Relationship Manager, Client Relationships - Standard Chartered Bank Gambia, March 2005 to 15th May 2006.
In my drive to gain more experience within SCB, I moved to CR as Relationship Manager
The job purpose is maximizing overall customer risk adjusted profitability and wallet share within the existing corporate customer portfolio and target customers.
Branch Manager, Serekunda - Standard Chartered Bank Gambia, August 2003 to February 2005
In August 2003, I took up the challenge of managing the second biggest SCB branch with a staff count of 35.
I registered rapid progress in the areas of sales, KYC and staff management within a very short period of time revamping morale to an all time high.
Head Marketing and Wealth Management - Standard Chartered Bank Gambia, February 2003 to August 2003
In February 2003, I handed over the role of Corporate Affairs and took on the new challenge of Wealth Management.
The new role of Wealth Management was new in Standard Chartered Bank, and basically involved value proposition development for all our high net worth customers.
In this role, I also served as Ag. Head of Consumer Banking, saw the idea generation and launching of Linksave, Bancassurance, Western Union and SCB’s business Transformation.
Head Marketing and Corporate Affairs - Standard Chartered Bank Gambia, June 1999 to February 2003 The role involves managing Marketing functions including resource allocation, setting and reviewing strategies and their monitoring as well as top-level marketing segment analysis with a view to increasing the profitability of the Consumer Banking Business.
In addition to the above, I was responsible for promoting the Bank’s image to its public in terms of internal and external strategies. I was charged with facilitating the building of strong relationships within and outside Standard Chartered Bank. During my watch, we managed to forge strong bonds with the Head of State, Secretaries of State, Staff members and Media Houses. The strong bond enabled Standard Chartered Bank to leverage on the trusting relationship to get things done.
Moreover, I contributed immensely in mapping out Standard Chartered Bank’s community partnership program, which was the envy of many within the region and group.
Marketing and Service Quality Manager - Standard Chartered Bank Gambia, December 1997 to June 1999
The challenge for this role was the fact that there was no such department within Standard Chartered Bank, Gambia. I played the leading role in ensuring that Consumer (Retail) Banking maintained its strategic focus and fulfilled its commitment to customers.
The role also included the development and implementation of a culture change program with a view to implementing a Customer Centered Quality Culture.
Trade Finance Officer - Standard Chartered Bank Gambia, December 1996 – November 1997
Within Corporate and Institutional Banking, I served as Trade Finance Officer, responsible for processing of Letters of Credit, Bonds and Guarantees, Inward Letters of Credit, raising and posting all entries and customer prospecting.
Marketing Officer - Gambia Telecommunication Company Ltd (GAMTEL) March 1994 to November 1996
The role with Gamtel, involved general Marketing of products and services, new product development, Telecentre Management and staff training on Customer Care. I championed the formulation of the first 5 year Corporate Strategy for Gamtel and set up the Marketing Department of The Gambia’s first television station (GRTS in December 1995).
Assistant Financial Controller- Sunwing Hotel March 1993 to March 1994
This role included Front Office Management, invoice preparation and reconciliation, general spot checks on all units and end of month stock taking.

Championed Standard Chartered Bank’s GMD 2.4million Child Centre project, which was immediately followed by the GMD 4million Pediatric Ward project. These were all geared toward leading the way in community partnership in The Gambia and Africa as a whole.

With positive attributes including infectious character, a dynamic approach to work and good leadership skills, I managed the Consumer Banking Department team of Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, and boost output from all fronts, during a two months (September to November 2001) exchange program with my Marketing Counterpart.

My strong influencing skills, ability to motivate a network of individuals, earned me the additional role of Head of Corporate Affairs. I facilitated the building of relationship both within and outside Standard Chartered Bank. From The Head of state, Secretaries of State, Staff members, media Houses etc, the bond is so strong that we can now leverage on the trusting relationship to get things done.

After one year of joining Standard Chartered Bank, Gambia, I moved from Trade Services to set up the Marketing and Service Quality Department of Consumer Banking in December 1997. Like all change processes, there was resistance. I picked up the difference between staff, selected those with strengths to form a Service Quality team and together, we infected energy and vitality into everyone and gradually raised staff morale to the level required to start a journey to create a Customer Focused Culture within Standard Chartered Bank, Gambia.

Still as Marketing and Service Quality Manager, I saw through the successful launch of the First ATMs in The Gambia, with the special Guest of Honor, being His Excellency, the President of the Republic of The Gambia in November 1999.
