The President of The Gambia National Olympics Committee GNOC Alhagi Abou Dandeh Njie Tuesday led executive members of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to State House for an audience with the President Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh.
The Gambian leader welcomed the delegation to The Gambia and also thanked them for choosing the country to host the federation's 21st General Assembly. President Jammeh explained the rational behind his love for sports, noting that it is an event that is very much instrumental in unifying people irrespective of their diversity. He said sports is crucial in promoting peace and unity and asserted that if any one wants to invest in humanity, he must invest in sports. The President further assured the sports fraternity of his personal support as well as government's collaboration in the development of sports in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, the president of the Commonwealth Games Federation Michael Fennell acknowledged the support and partnership received by the sports fraternity from government under the leadership of President Jammeh. Mr Fennell briefed President Jammeh on the current activities of the Commonwealth Games Federation, prominent among them being the next Commonwealth Games to be hosted in India in 2010. He described the Commonwealth as the only global body with a representation of all the regions of the world.
During the courtesy call, President Jammeh was presented with the federation's badge and a certificate as a token of appreciation for his support. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports Sheriff Gomez. |
