The President Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh has pledged one million dalasi for each player and official of the Under Seventeen Football team following the team's victory in the Africa Under Seventeen Youth Championship in Algeria.
Speaking at the victory celebration at the July 22nd Square on Saturday, 4th April 2009 President Jammeh said the money was in fulfillment of the surprise package he promised the boys before their return. The Gambian leader used the moment to thank all Gambians for their support. He also acknowledged the support of his Cabinet especially the Vice President Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy for her concern about the safety and security of the team. President Jammeh expressed his resolve to work with the Gambia Football Association and Sports Department on modalities for the team to go on a nation wide tour. He assured the team of his support and commended the coach and officials for a job well done. He extended gratitude to the host country Algeria for the conducive environment that prevailed during the tournament and for supporting the Gambian team.
The Secretary of State for Youth and Sport Sheriff Gomez thanked President Jammeh for his inspiration, commitment and support and expressed his department's resolve to promote and develop sports in the country. The President GFA Seedy Kinteh spoke at length about the achievement and commended the Algerians for their support. The vice president of GFA Major General Lang Tombong Tamba described the boys as heroes and expressed gratitude to President Jammeh for the moral and financial support.
The celebration was attended by thousands of football enthusiasts and other dignitaries.
