ON EASTER EVE

8th April 2004:

The President Dr. Alhaji Yahya Jammeh has donated a consignment of sugar and rice to the Christian Community as a goodwill gesture on the Holy feast of Easter.

Such goodwill gesture from the president is becoming a tradition whenever feasts are celebrated in the Gambia. Similar gestures have been extended to the Muslims in the country in the past.

At a ceremony held at State House, First Lady Madam Zainab Yahya Jammeh handed over the items on behalf of the head of state to representatives of Gambia Christian Council.

Vice President Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy witnessed the handing over ceremony. She stressed the importance of interfaith dialogue, and has said that it would help preserve the peace and tranquility existing in the Gambia.

She commended religious leaders for maintaining the peaceful co-habitation between people of different faiths in the country.
She also conveyed President Jammeh's greetings and best wishes to the entire Christian community on the blessed feast of Easter.

The Secretary of State for Religious Affairs, Sulayman Masanneh Ceesay commended President for what he described as "a laudable gesture". Speaking on behalf of the Christian Council, Reverend William Peter Stevens thanked President Jammeh for the gift, adding that it demonstrates the exceptional cordial relations amongst Muslims and Christians in the Gambia.
