| The European Commission Charge d'Affaires in The Gambia Helene Cave last Friday handed over supplies for the Rural Water Supply Sector Support project to the President Professor Alhaji Yahya Jammeh. The project aims to increase access to rural and peri-urban water supply for about 115,000 people across the country. The items in the supplies comprised 15 motorcycles, 3 double cabin pickups, 3 station wagons, and bore hole drilling materials. According to the EC Charge d'Affaires, there are two more crane trucks to be delivered as part of the supplies.
Madam Helene Cave said the budget of the project is estimated at 6.8 million Euros. She assured the President of the EU's commitment to assist and support The Gambia's endeavour to reach the Millennium Development goals.
In response, the Professor Alhaji Yahya Jammeh thanked the EU for its remarkable support to the Gambia. He described the gesture as a wonderful gift for the Gambian populace, noting that the importance of water to human survival and the attainment of development goals cannot be over emphasized. The Water Resources Secretary Yankuba Touray and the Permanent Secretary Department of State for Finance and Economic Affairs Mod Secka thanked the EC for their continued support to the Gambia . The handing over ceremony at the state house was witnessed by secretaries of state and officials and staff of the EC country office and the department of water resources.
