| The European Commission has handed over 10 vehicles including road maintenance equipment as well as ICT equipment worth over 17 million dalasi to National Road Authority NRA at a ceremony held at the State HouseThursday 2nd April 2009. The items are part of the capacity building between the EU and The Gambia.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh commended EU for what he called ‘a wonderful assistance'. Professor Jammeh renewed government's resolve to continue to work with the EU and called on NRA to use the vehicles and equipment for the intended purpose. President Jammeh also stressed the need for the classification of the country's roads in order to ensure its judicious use. Professor Jammeh used the occasion to reiterate his personal commitment to the development of The Gambia's road infrastructure.
The Secretary of State for Works, Construction and Infrastructure Lamin Bojang said the donation is a clear manifestation of the EC commitment to assist The Gambia in her development efforts. He said the NRA was established to improve and monitor the country's road system. Mr. Bojang promised that the items would be put into good use. The Secretary of State for Finance and Economic Affairs Musa Gibril Bala Gaye noted that good and well maintained roads are vital to socio-economic development. Secretary of State Gaye said government has invested heavily in beefing up the country's road network.
The EC Charge d'Affaires Helene Cave reaffirmed EU's commitment to assist the Gambia realize its socio-economic development goals.
