The Gambia has been commended for achieving all the four primary convergence under the Second Monetary Zone, which is a step towards the implementation of one single currency for the West Africa Sub-region. The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Muhammed Ibn Chambers made the remarks Monday afternoon shortly after meeting the President, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Yahya Jammeh who also doubles as the Chairman of the West Africa Monetary Zone.
Dr. Ibn Chambas told journalists his discussion with the Gambian leader centered on the need to convene a Summit of Heads of State to map out a new time table for the introduction of the second monetary currency, the Eco, which has due to the financial crisis failed its 2009 target.
The Gambia, it seems, has been one country out of many that is committed to the process of a single currency on the Sub-region. Some other members have failed successful economic reforms to speed up the implementation of the Second Monetary Zone. Dr. Chambas also blamed the global financial crisis and related factors on the failure of Governments to meet the 2009 deadline.
The ECOWAS Commission President was accompanied to the State House by the Secretary General of the West Africa Monetary Zone, among a number of high ranking officials.
