President Yahya Jammeh, yesterday received at State House, Dr Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), who is on a two-day working visit in The Gambia.
Speaking to journalists shortly after his audience with The Gambian leader, Dr Jacques Diouf said that the purpose of his visit to The Gambia was to congratulate President Jammeh on his inauguration for the third term in office following his landslide victory in the last Presidential elections.
The FAO Director-General added that his discussion with the Gambian leader was centered on the problems of food security in The Gambia, West Africa and the African continent and expressed his wish to see the growth of the agricultural sector in The Gambia.”
“We also discussed on general problems in the world, the place of Africa in the global economy, the problems of African Unity, integration and the trends on social issues,” Dr Jacques Diouf said.
According to him, his visit was meant to deepen the excellent relationship that exists between the Gambia and FAO. He added that the Gambian leader has set an example in the area of farming. Dr Jacques Diouf also said that farming contributes to the GDP of a country and that majority of the Gambian people get their income from farming. He noted that President Jammeh was right on his back to the land call.
On his impressions on the infrastructural developments in The Gambia, Dr Jacques said “I am highly impressed with the infrastructural developments taking place in the Gambia”. He added that infrastucture is the basis of development for a country. |
