President Jammeh receives FAo Director General

The Director General of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization Jacque Diouf on Monday paid a courtesy call on the President Alhaji Yahya Jammeh and the Vice president Aja Isatou Njie Saidy at State House. Mr. Diouf was accompanied to State House by the FAO country representative, Babagana Ahmadu.

Speaking to reporters after a marathon meeting with the Gambian leader, the Senegalese born FAO boss said he discussed with President Jammeh a "huge programme" to be undertaken by his organization and Government to address food insecurity in the short and long term. He said the meeting also accorded him the opportunity to have first hand information on what is done in The Gambia towards the attainment of food security.

Dr. Diouf praised the government for its efforts in mitigating the effects of the global food crisis. He said due to effective planning, The Gambia was able to make sure enough quantity of rice was available, thus helping the country to manage during food crisis. The FAO boss also recognized the importance President Jammeh attaches to agriculture, citing his engagement in farming as well as holding the portfolio of Agriculture Minister. He said FAO is committed to help government implement projects that would enhance the productivity of farmers for the realization of food security.
