FIRST LADY
DONATES RICE TO GAMBIAN WOMEN
First Lady Zineb Yahya Jammeh has concluded a nation-wide
tour during which she distributed 15,000 bags of rice to women in
all divisions and municipalities in the country as food for the Ramadan.
Continuing a tradition of the first family to make gifts to Muslims
throughout the country every Ramadan, the Gambian first lady also
donated D10,000 in all the areas she went, to pay for transporting
the rice and other logistics to ensure the food reaches the beneficiaries
in all Gambian villages and towns.
In the past, the President and his family invited commissioners and
mayors to assemble at State House, where bags of rice and sugar were
handed over to them for distribution to the people.
However, this year, the First Lady went on tour to hand over food
for consumption at the end of fasting, as recommended in Islam - that
Muslims who are better off help others who are less fortunate with
food, especially during Ramadan.
The tour from last Monday through Thursday started in the North Bank
Division, where she handed over high quality rice as follows: NBD
2000 bags of rice; CRD 3000 bags; URD 2000 bags; LRD 1000 bags; Western
Division 3000 bags; KMC 3000 bags; Banjul 1000 bags plus D10,000 cash
in every place visited.
The first lady was accompanied on the tour by Secretaries of State
Susan Waffa Ogoo and Fatou Lamin Faye, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay MP,
the executive director of the Jammeh Foundation for Peace Henrietta
Sonko and other government officials.
