The Right Honourable Jean Chretien, former Prime
Minister of Canada (1993-2003) and delegation paid a two-day working
visit to the Republic of The Gambia from Wednesday, 31st March
to Thursday 1st April 2004 as guests of His Excellency The President
of the Republic of The Gambia, Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh.
The Right Honourable Jean Chretien and delegation
were met on arrival at Banjul International Airport by Her Excellency
The Vice President and Secretary of State for Women's Affairs,
Madam Ajaratou Isatou Njie-Saidy, Honourable Secretaries of State
and high-ranking Government Officials.
In his first official engagement, the right Honourable
Jean Chretien held useful consultations with a cross section of
the private sector.
The Right Honourable Jean Chretien had a tête-à-tête
with His Excellency The President, Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh.
As a result of their frank exchange of views, Alhaji Dr. Yahya
A.J.J. Jammeh and the Right Honourable Jean Chretien reaffirmed
the commitment of the Government of The Gambia to the goals and
objectives of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
In this regard, the Government of The Gambia is especially appreciative
of Mr. Chretien's encouragement and support for the initiatives
to boost social and business investment in The Gambia.
Furthermore, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien
stated his willingness in supporting development in The Gambia,
in particular, policy and programme objectives that are locally
initiated by individuals or groups that would put The Gambia on
the path of sustainable growth and development. Finally Mr. Chretien
expressed optimism in improving the already existing relationship
and cooperation between The Gambia and Canada and looked forward
to working with President Yahya Jammeh and the Government of The
Gambia.
