president jammeh discharges 24 hiv/aids patients
14th August 2008

President Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh on Thursday discharged twenty-four patients following their successful treatment under his HIV/AIDS treatment program. They were among 63 people from the third, fourth and fifth batches who have been cleared of the HIV/AIDS virus from a total of 122 patients currently receiving treatment under the President's HIV/AIDS treatment program.

The colourful ceremony held at Kanilai Thursday evening was also graced by the Vice President Dr. Aja Isatou Saidy, senior government officials, diplomats, friends and relatives of the patients. Speaking on the occasion, the Gambian leader announced the discovery of a cure for the enlargement of prostrates gland that causes urine retention. He said the plant is not available locally and thanked Almighty Allah for making the breakthrough possible. President Jammeh also hailed his medical team under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Tamsir Mbowe for their patience and hardwork.

The Gambian leader however, informed the discharged patients that being cured of the virus doesn't mean they are immune to HIV. He therefore advised them to do their utmost to avoid re-infection. President Jammeh disclosed that with his new HIV/AIDS medication, up to one thousand people can be treated at a time, but noted that the high cost involved and the lack of required resources make it impossible. He hoped that philanthropists will come out to support the initiative in the interest of humanity.

Commenting on his infertility treatment program, Dr. Jammeh disclosed that up to one hundred women who received his medication will deliver in August and September.

The Director General of the Presidential treatment program, Dr. Tamsir Mbowe commended the Gambian leader for his dynamic and visionary leadership. He said that Dr. Jammeh's breakthrough will elevate the status of traditional medicine and that the treatment program was designed to serve humanity.

Speaking on behalf of the cured patients, Sonna Bah and Niappa Bah thanked Allah the Almighty and President Jammeh for saving their lives.

The ceremony was chaired by the Chief Medical Director RVTH, Dr. Mariatou Jallow.
