President Jammeh Announces Cure for Stroke and Skin Cancer as He Presides over Celebrations of the First Anniversary of his HIV/AIDS Breakthrough

17th January 2008

The President Dr Alhagie Yahya Jammeh on Thursday presided over celebrations marking the first anniversary of his breakthrough in the treatment of HIV\AIDS and other diseases at the July 22nd Square. President Jammeh used the occasion to announce his latest ability to cure stroke and skin cancer.

On his free treatment programme Dr Jammeh explained that it is not geared towards challenging or fighting anyone especially pharmaceutical companies but rather to ease the suffering of humankind. Since the start of the President's treatment programme four batches of people living with HIV/AIDS have been successfully cured. He however cautioned the cured patients to guard against future infection.

The chairperson of the presidential treatment technical support team Neneh Macdouall Gaye who's also the Secretary of State for Communications and Information Technology hailed the President for the breakthrough and called for concerted efforts to support the program.

Two cured patients Ansumana Sanneh and Sonna Jallow thanked the President for restoring their health and called on infected people to come forward and seek treatment. They said the breakthrough is worth commemorating as it has allayed fears about the pandemic.

The director of the presidential treatment programme Dr Tamsir Mbowe described the breakthrough as unique and historic. He said no other public health crisis has ever been more challenging than HIV/AIDS and as he put it ‘'the world was on a looming catastrophe''. He however, maintained that with the discovery of a cure for the disease by President Jammeh, hope has been restored in infected persons.

The Secretary of State for Health Dr Malick Njie explained that the President's treatment program is driven by the desire to alleviate human suffering. He said his department recognizes the importance of traditional medicine and therefore pledged his unflinching support to President Jammeh's treatment programme. As a good will gesture the Gambian leader donated buses to all Senior Secondary Schools in Banjul, Mindaw Senior Secondary in Western region as well as GTTI and Nusrat.
