BASSE DECLARED NO-GO AREA FOR OPPOSITIONS
7th September 2006

A symbolic representation of paying last respect to oppositionism in the provincial capital of Basse was the order of the day for the first time in the 12 years of President Yahya Jammeh's rule, when thousands of people stormed the streets of Basse panting and yelling with banners and placards written [Jammeh for ever, Jammeh for progress, In Jammeh we trust, No election] in welcoming President Jammeh with his high power delegation in Basse on his annual 'dialogue with the people tour'.

A political analyst Alhaji Banta Camara who spoke at the meeting described the welcoming of The Gambian leader as synonymous to declaring Basse a No-Go area for the oppositions. To synchronize the assertion of the political analyst and the revelations of the various speakers at the meeting confirms a unanimous switch of allegiance of Basse to the ruling APRC party.

Basse a predominant Sarahule community in their own words said they are amazed with the mammoth development strides of President Jammeh not only in Basse but country wide. According to the speakers the Gambian leader has face lifted the country in all avenues.

The Gambian leader commissioned a new generator for an onward transmission in Basse marking the end of electricity black-out in Basse.

For his part President Yahya Jammeh thanked the people of Basse for seeing the light and defending the truth. He assured them of his government support not only for the people of Basse but the entire Upper River Region.

President Jammeh also launched a scholarship scheme for students in the Upper River Division. For a start, 45 students from 15 basic cycle schools benefited from the first package.
