The President Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh and Commander-in-Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces presided over the Gambia Armed Forces' Inter-Service Drill Competition at the July 22nd Square in Banjul on Thursday 10th December. The event was organized in fulfillment of the Chief of Defense Staff's training directives 2009.
Participants in this year's competition come from the Gambia National Army (GNA), the Republican National Guard (RNG) and the Gambia Navy (GN). The main objective of the inter-service drill competition is to establish a competitive spirit among the three security services, enhance discipline within the services as well as to enforce regimentations and instill a sense of military culture in the Gambia Armed Forces.
In a statement, President Jammeh congratulated officers and men of the Gambia Armed Forces for their participation in the competition, noting that today's competition is a manifestation of the unity and cooperation among the soldiers. He further called for total discipline within the Armed Forces, adding indiscipline will never be tolerated in the armed forces as promotion is based on merit and not seniority.
President Jammeh further commended members of the Gambia Armed Forces for their hard work and dedication to duty, and lauded the efforts of the friends of the Gambia Armed Forces for their contribution to its development over the recent years.
At the end of the competition the Gambia National Army (GNA) came out first with 448 points and won a cash prize of D55, 000, a giant trophy, with three bulls and 15 crates of can drinks. The Republican National Guards (RGN) came out second with 350 points and a cash price of 38, 000, a trophy, two bulls and ten crates of can drinks, while the Gambia Navy got third position with 256 points. They were awarded a trophy with a cash price of 21,000 a bull and five crates of can drinks.
The ceremony was attended by the Vice President Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, Speaker of the National Assembly , among several dignitaries.
