The President Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh on Thursday, 5th November presided over the swearing-in-ceremony of the new Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Abu Bakar Gaye in the Cabinet Room at State House.
Dr. Gaye took the oath of office, allegiance, and secrecy administered by the Secretary to Cabinet Dr. Njogu Bah. The new Health Minister pledged to execute his duties without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.
Speaking on the occasion, President Jammeh reiterated his government's commitment in the provision of quality and affordable health care delivery system for all Gambians. While lamenting on the issue of theft at the Central Medical Store, the Gambian leader stressed the need for the creation of a Drug Inspectorate Unit that will inspect and monitor private pharmacies for the use of government drugs.
President Jammeh noted that health, education, and agriculture sectors are indispensable to the country's socio-economic development. He also used the occasion to denounce corruption and urged civil servants to be punctual and dedicated to duty.
Also speaking on the occasion, the Vice President Dr. Aja Isatou Njie Saidy hoped that the new minister will live up to expectations. Dr. Njie Saidy described the health sector as a top priority for Government, noting that The Gambia has one of the best health facilities in the sub-region.
The Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, Abdoulie Sallah highlighted the giant strides taken by President Jammeh in ensuring efficient and effective health care delivery system for all Gambians. The Minister of Trade Industry and Employment Yuspha Kah expressed similar sentiments.
