MODERN CAMPUS FOR GAMBIA UNIVERSITY SOON

His Excellency, Dr. Alhajie Yahya Jammeh president of the Gambia who is also the Chancellor of the University of the Gambia has hinted that a modern university campus would be built for the institution soon. Head of state Jammeh made the remarks on Saturday at the convocation ceremony of 48 graduates of the University of The Gambia.

An honorary doctorate degree of law was also conferred on the Gambian leader at the groundbreaking ceremony attended by many dignitaries held at the friendship hotel in Bakau. Jammehís promise of a modern campus was in response to the Dr. Donald Ekong, Vice-Chancellorís appeal for government to build a well-equipped campus to house both lecturers and students, which would provide a conducive atmosphere for learning. Head of state Jammeh also invited investment and support from development partners and the private sector; highlighting the fundamental benefits university education would bring to them.†

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Yamai Secka Jack commended President Jammeh for his vision and the dynamism exhibited by his government especially in the education sector since 1994. She thanked the management, staff and students of the university for their hard work commitment and endurance.

Bachelors degrees was awarded to 48 graduates from the faculties of Humanities, Economics and Management, Agriculture and allied sciences were certificated after completing a 4-year degree programme at the University of the Gambia. The convocation ceremony marks for the first time, Gambians acquiring graduate degrees in their home country in the history of the Nation.
